2008:  The launch of Leggies ....

September 3rd 2008:  The launch of Leggies!!!  Trish Wall outlined the objectives of the group and Meryl Gregory expressed our wish to combine sociable meetings with fund-raising activities; Cancer Support France and Macmillan Cancer Support would be our initial project.  Rachel Hart was introduced and spoke of her career as an Inspector in the Welsh police force, her work with drug-busting teams and the equipment used, then answered questions ranging from arming the police to attitudes towards women in the police force.

October 2008:  Nervous about flying? Not after hearing our speaker Sarah Vant explaining her role as English teacher to the air traffic controllers in our local airports, vitally important as English is the universal language used in aviation for directing incoming traffic. We were all reassured that we are safe in their hands! It was decided that a coffee morning would be held in October in aid of our chosen charity with stalls for cakes, preserves, nearly new, plants, oddments, and a raffle. Members volunteered to man (or should that be woman?) stalls, bake cakes/ buns/ biscuits etc. and contribute in other ways.  The coffee morning was held chez Mme. Gregory in the morning and despite the rain and fog was well supported. After a morning of cakes, cups of coffee and a lot of laughter, a total of €500 had been raised which would be divided between Cancer Support France and Macmillan Cancer Support. Well done everyone!

November 2008:  One of our members, Annette Howard, stepped into the breach for the November meeting as the scheduled speaker had to cancel. She showed how to make greetings cards, passing on clever tips and ideas. Materials were provided and we all had a go with varying results, causing much amusement at our own and our friends' efforts Some of us had a definite artistic flair. Members were asked for ideas for a charity for 2009, a choice to be made at the December meeting

December 2008:  Annette Howard, most ably assisted by Trish Wall, was in the hot seat again for the December meeting, showing us how to make a floral decoration for our Christmas table.  Before they began the aims of the three charities suggested for next year: Hope and Homes for Children, The White Ribbon Alliance and Maison des Femmes, were explained. After a ballot Maison des Femmes, which provides a safe shelter for victims of domestic violence, was chosen.   Hope and Homes for Children, which was the second choice, will be carried forward to 2010.  Then into the fray; table centrepieces and door wreaths took shape under the deft hands of our duo. Seeing the amount of foliage, flowers, baubles and bows, plus a candle, which a wine glass will accommodate took me back to the days of competitions to see how many students would fit into a phone box!
